An American in Paris (in London)

The show is never still … An American in Paris, with Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope.

Where did it come from?

An American In Paris started off as an Oscar winning film in 1951. The film itself was actually inspired by a 1928 orchestra piece and ended up on Broadway for 18 months where it received four Tony Awards. Lucky for us, the Christopher Wheeldon musical has now arrived in London’s West End to make us all wish we were in Paris too.

What is it all about?

The show follows the life of American ex soldier Jerry. Jerry is an aspiring painter in Paris following the war who sings and dances his way through his love life. Jerry falls in love with Lise who has two other men competing for her attention in the form of Henri and Adam. To top it off, there’s another beautiful lady called Milo who is so head over heels for Jerry that she gives Lise a job!

What about the finer details?

Considering this being a lesser well known show compared to others in the West End the music was perfected. The choreography and set design too. The music in An American in Paris comes from the original orchestra piece that was the inspiration behind the film. I think there is something really beautiful about such an old piece of music still being used in today’s theatre. The set design was so impressive I almost felt like I wan in Paris already. There was something very glamorous and masquerade-esque about the whole night whic was beautiful.

What this show does very well (as you would expect) is make you very fond of Paris. I am actually heading there this weekend and I wasn’t excited until I saw An American in Paris.

I can definitely see where all the five star reviews came from. They are plastered all over the posters in tube stations. It may not be as well known as others, but it’s worth a watch without a doubt.
