Funny Girl the Musical Review: “Sheridan is exceptional”

Funny girl review

Sheridan Smith returns to the stage after a brief absence to exceed expectations in this beautifully revitalised rendition of the 1963 show that made Barbara Streisand’s career. Funny Girl The Musical has got everyone talking and is an absolute must see. Set in 1960’s New York, Funny Girl tells the story of Fanny Brice, an unknown signer from Brooklyn, who rises to fame and stardom while reminiscing about her turbulent life with husband Nicky, a notorious gambler.

Aside from starring the likes of the incredibly talented, multi award winner Sheridan Smith, the fabulous supporting cast including Darius Campbell and Joel Montague, it’s no surprise Funny Girl quickly became the Menier Chocolate Factory’s fastest-selling show of all time after premiering there last year before moving to the glamourous setting of the Savoy Theatre. Smith really steps out of Streisand’s shadow and makes the role her own and her comical yet loving relationship with Montague’s character Eddie Ryan is truly heart-warming.

This feel-good story brings the glitz and glamour of the 60s’ to London’s West End, and is a real celebration of American Womanhood and female empowerment told though the outstanding music of Jule Styne, which features some of the most classic songs in Broadway history such as ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ and ‘You Are Woman’ that have captivated audiences for the last half a century. The show is a real credit to producer Ray Stark and has been nominated for no fewer than eight Tony Awards.
