Harry Potter & The Cursed Child Preview

*** This preview contains exciting Competition news, but no plot spoilers, so please read on ! ***

The long-awaited sequel to the Harry Potter series is here! Currently previewing at the beautifully gothic Palace Theatre just ahead of the official opening on 30 July, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will bring us back to the world of Wizarding and pick up right from the epilogue of The Deathly Hallows, as, nineteen years on, Ginny and Harry send off their middle child Albus to Hogwarts.

Harry Potter and The Cursed ChildThis time, Harry is now occupied in the Ministry of Magic while Albus navigates Hogwarts, encountering a whole host of youthful misadventures. The plays echo the earlier novels’ themes of friendships and coming-of-age struggles with the new generation, while fondly revisiting the older characters (perhaps in recognition that most of the earlier Potterheads have already grown up and may have families of their own). In short Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is a thrilling, heartwarming and very welcome installment to the franchise for fans and all the family.

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is also very much JK Rowling’s baby, with injections of stage magic from director John Tiffany, who appears to make items and characters reappear and disappear so smoothly before our eyes that one might suspect him of being a wizard himself. The stage may not possess the eye-popping grandeur of the film sets and CGI, but like the novels, it relies on suggestion and sophisticatedly simplistic set-ups to let the audience’s imagination fill in the gaps. Although it’s a play that caters largely to the fans rather than a new inductee, there is plenty of spine-tingling twists and affectionate in-jokes to delight every member of the audience. Certainly JK Rowling and writer Jack Thorne have gone to great lengths to ensure that, while the childhood magic remains, the tale has matured with its fanbase.

Though soHarry Potter and The Cursed Child Previewme of the Box Office Theatre team have been fortunate to watch the previews, little about the plot proper can be revealed at this point nor would we want to. The love for Potter has ensured that those privileged to attend previews, be them Cast, crew, journalists or fans, have been sworn to secrecy. The #KeepTheSecret trend is evidence of how there is collective will to preserve the excitement for future audiences. We will say though that the 42-member cast suggests that the tale will be much larger-scale and epic than the official synopsis implies. Indeed, the play itself is split into two parts, and audiences are intended to watch either one half in the matinee show and the other in the evening, or over two consecutive nights.

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is previewing at the Palace Theatre, specially decorated for the play and harkening back to the splendor of Hogwarts, with the official opening at the end of July.
