The play is about Powell’s explosive ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, bringing to life the community that inspired it, and its effects on a woman trying to make sense of her life 30 years later.
Roxana Silbert, who’s directing What Shadows, is currently the artistic director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Her recent theatre credits include The Government Inspector, Anita and Me, and The King’s Speech–all of which Birmingham Repertory Theatre produced.

Ian McDiarmid is an Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor. Internationally, he is most famous for playing Palpatine in the Star Wars film series. His stage performances include Merchant of Venice (Almeida), Life of Galileo (Stratford), and Timon of Athens (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre).
Nicholas Le Prevost will play Clem Jones. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he went on to perform in TV and radio shows like It Takes a Worried Man, The Jewel in the Crown, and HR. Also, in 2002 Nicholas received a nomination for an Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical or Entertainment for his performance in My Fair Lady.
Amelia Donkor will perform a double role as Rose Cruickshank and Joyce Cruickshank. Her theatre credits include Villette (West Yorkshire Playhouse), Vassa Zheleznova (Southwark Playhouse), and Richard III (New Diorama Theatre).
Meanwhile, Paula Wilcox will play Grace Hughes and Marjorie Jones. She mostly worked in TV shows like Upstart Crow, Still Open All Hours, and Boomers. However, Paula is best known for playing Chrissy Plummer in the British comedy Man About the House and Hillary Potts in Emmerdale.
Lastly, joining them are Waleed Akhtar (Saeed), Ameet Chana (Sultan/Doctor Sharma), and Joanne Pearce (Sofia/Pamela).
